WordPress… Does My Website Need It? – Totum Design Co.

Let’s just get one thing out of the way – if you have a business, you need a website. Getting a website may or may not be something you have no clue about, but it doesn’t have to be confusing or scary! Some of the things you’ll need to know when you’re looking at your options is whether or not you’ll need to update it often, with what kind of content, and if you want to be doing that yourself or not.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system that a website administrator can log into to update content (website pages, blog posts, pictures). Basically, the website design and development code is separate from your content, and then WordPress holds all of the information you want to display within the design.

Not all websites need WordPress, but it makes updating a lot easier.

A Website Without WordPress

You may not need WordPress integrated with your site if the information in it won’t change often (so, maybe once or twice a year), you don’t need a blog / news / updatable feed, and you’d like to save a bit of money but also get a custom website design. It’s completely possible to include your content in the website development code, stylize it nicely and keep the information current but not have a content management system like WordPress.

A Website With WordPress

You will need WordPress integrated with your site if you plan on changing the content often (or even if you plan on paying an agency to update it, they might prefer it to be editable with WordPress), or if you plan on sharing blog posts, news, events, etc. Integrating WordPress with your website usually costs more because it takes more time to develop and set up correctly, but in the long run it can save you money if you’d like to be able to update content for yourself.

Websites integrated with WordPress can be designed custom or using templates, some of which are free, but of course we are always advocates for getting a custom website designed just for your business. When we meet with our clients, we assess their needs and create a one-of-a-kind site that works the best for their users and content.
